Description

E. C. Segar Popeye-Related Production Materials Binder (c. 1930s). I yam what I yam!... And that's all that I yam! This binder full of Popeye-related materials includes numerous pieces written or penciled by Popeye creator E. C. Segar, and is perfect for a superfan of the spinach-loving sailor. Highlights include a double-sided page of story ideas written in pencil by Segar; a two-page autobiographical description of Popeye, written in pencil by Segar (c. 1936, later copy-lettered by Bud Sagendorf for Popeye: The First Fifty Years, Pages 44-45); and a double-sided page featuring story and gag ideas written beside character study sketches. Additionally, there is a logo for Sappo created in graphite and signed by Segar, a short note written by Segar, as well as three vintage printed Popeye fan cards all featuring art by Segar: one printed as "'Popeye in New York' Number Two", one with the name "Saggy" penciled in by Segar, and one personalized to Bud Sagendorf with Segar's iconic cigar-styled signature in graphite. Also included are photocopy reproductions of two early Segar strips from Charlie Chaplin's Comic Capers (circa 1920s). All materials have toning and handling wear commensurate with age, as well as some smudging, small tears, and marginal chipping. In Excellent condition.
