    Description

Yellow Kid in McFadden's Flats Advertising Poster (G. W. Dillingham, 1896). The Yellow Kid is widely considered to be the first American comic strip superstar. He was originally created in 1894 as a minor character in Richard Outcault's comic art featured in Truth magazine. A year later, in Outcault's Hogan's Alley panels in the New York World, this little ragged urchin with jug ears and a bright yellow nightshirt became a breakaway success. When Outcault was hired by Hearst's New York Journal to do the McFadden's Flats strip, the Kid came with him, and went on to be used in all manner of advertising. This rare sign promoted the first book collection of the Kid's Journal strips. The book itself is a very tough item to find; a promo poster like this is practically unheard of! It has an image area of approximately 12" x 18", matted and Plexiglas framed to an overall 17" x 23". The poster appears to have a tiny bit of damage to the upper right corner, some light exposure from an earlier framing, and an old crease through the middle is faintly visible, but overall it displays as being in Excellent condition. We seriously doubt a finer example exists, if indeed there is another survivor out there. It's the ultimate Yellow Kid collectible! From The Art of the Funnies Collection.
