Description

Willie Whopper Theatrical Poster (Ub Iwerks, 1933). After leaving the Walt Disney Studios in 1930, master animator Ub Iwerks set out on his own. Armed with a distribution contract from MGM, Iwerks gathered a team and began producing a series of Flip the Frog shorts. When Flip started to run out of steam, Ub's next character was a tall-tale telling young lad named Willie Whopper. Willie's first short was Play Ball, released to theaters in 1933. There were 14 Willie Whopper shorts in all (counting the very first one, The Air Race, which was held from release, and remade as Spite Flight a few months later). Originally depicted as a thin boy with a "spit curl" of hair across his forehead; he would quickly morph into chubby, red-haired lad. Here's the original poster for this rare character, a professionally restored, linen-backed one sheet (27" x 41") stock poster. It's believed to be the only Willie Whopper poster produced; we've seen no others. Framed with glass, for an overall size of 31.75" x 45"; frame is sold as-is. The poser is in Very Good restored condition.
