Description
Steamboat Willie RARE Mickey Mouse Poster Concept Layout Drawing (Walt Disney, 1929). Mickey Mouse captains the ship in this incredibly rare poster concept layout drawing for the mouse's first animated short, Steamboat Willie. The short premiered on 11/18/1928, directed by Walt Disney and animated by Ub Iwerks. It wasn't only the first Mickey Mouse short to premiere - it was the first cartoon with synchronized sound! It can't be overstated how important it was for Disney and animation as a whole, ringing in a new era of innovation and creativity. This one-of-a-kind concept drawing for the black and white theatrical poster is the work of animator Burt Gillett (1891 - 1971) and was held in his estate until it was offered at auction in 1994. While the film was released in the fall of 1928, the poster was retroactively designed in the Spring of 1929. The drawing is rendered in graphite and measures about 7.5'' x 10.5'' on 12 field 2-peghole animation paper with the title of the film lightly written next to Mickey. A print of the final theatrical poster has been included in the lot as reference and appears on both the table of contents and page 14 of "Learn to Draw Mickey & Friends Over the Decades" by Walter Foster Jr. In the book, the artwork is miscredited to Ub Iwerks. None of the original posters are known to have survived so the existence of this original design is nothing short of a miracle. Whether you're a tried and true Disney collector, a fan of animation, or an early poster collector, there's no denying this concept layout drawing will be the highlight of your collection and will stand as a testament to the heart and charm of this little mouse known around the world. Very Good condition with minor edge and handling wear, light age-related toning, a small edge tear, and faint creases where folded.Auction Info
