Adventures of Captain Marvel Chapter 1 Serial Poster (Republic, 1941). The very first serial based on a comic book character was in fact one of the very best serials of all time (if not the best). When negotiations with DC broke down to feature Superman in the serial that eventually became The Mysterious Doctor Satan, Republic switched gears and produced an exciting, well plotted story featuring Fawcett's Captain Marvel. The special effects, primarily the flying scenes, were among the finest ever for that time period, and the serial became a fan favorite for many years, long after the comic book ceased publication. This 27" x 41" one sheet poster for the first chapter is the only one to feature a full color action pose of the Captain, with no insert box for a photo (like subsequent chapter posters, which were printed in one color only), and it's as iconic and memorable a superhero image as there ever was. The poster is in Very Fine condition, matted and Plexiglas framed to an overall 30" x 44.5". Hake's Price Guide for Pop Culture Memorabilia cites the Chapter One poster as rare, with less than ten known to exist. It gives a Fine value of $7,500, and a Near Mint value of $11,500. From The Art of the Funnies Collection.
