    Description

Popular Comics #1 (Dell, 1936) CGC VG- 3.5 Off-white to white pages. There's no more desirable comic for the Dick Tracy collector than the highest-graded copy of Tracy's first comic book appearance! This is also a milestone in another sense, as it's the first-ever Dell comic book -- thousands would follow for the most prolific publisher of the Golden and Silver Ages. There's even a third premiere to note here: the first comic book appearance of radio character Don Winslow of the Navy, who would go on to star in his own book at Fawcett in years to come. The rest of the book is a virtual Who's Who of 1930s comicdom: there's Little Orphan Annie, Gasoline Alley, Harold Teen, Terry and the Pirates, and Mutt and Jeff, and those are just the biggest names on a roster too long to list in its entirety (and check out an unusually lighthearted moment for Tracy, as he shares the cover with some jokesters from the funny pages). A look at the issue's date speaks volumes -- comics from the Platinum Age like this one don't often survive in top condition (Overstreet doesn't even list grades for VF/NM or above), explaining why this VG- book is alone at the top of CGC's current census. In fact, not many of the books have survived, period: this book is rated "scarce" by Gerber's Photo-Journal, meaning less than 50 copies are estimated to exist. Overstreet 2004 VG 4.0 value = $1,230.
