Description

Universal Studios - King Kong Encounter Back Lot Studio Tour Animatronic King Kong Maquette (Universal Studios, c. 1986). This is an exceptionally rare maquette used in the creation of the intimidating 7-ton, 30ft-tall animatronic star of the King Kong Encounter, part of the Universal Studio Tour in Hollywood! Designed by famed Walt Disney Imagineer and show engineer Bob Gurr, the character was inspired by Paramount Pictures' King Kong (released 1976) and was the largest and most complex animatronic figure at the time of its creation in 1986. This maquette, hand-crafted of dense foam, was created in two pieces, with the head original separate from the body and attached via a peg support. Its pronounced fanged teeth were painted white to complete the menacing expression and the entire maquette was coated for presentation and preservation. In 2008, a fire broke out at Universal Studios resulting in the closure of King Kong Encounter and its replacement - King Kong 360 3D in 2010. This original artifact remains a testament to the fondly remembered original attraction that entertained and terrified audiences for over 20 years at Universal Studios Hollywood! Measuring 20.5" x 15" x 14", this maquette and its custom wooden display base are in Good condition, exhibiting surface wear throughout from use and age of its materials.
