Green Chri$tma$ Scripts, Research Material, and Award Group (1958). "We wish you a Merry Christmas, We wish you a Merry Christmas, We wish you a Merry Christmas. So Please Buy Our Beer!" Stan Freberg writes in his book It Only Hurts When I Laugh, on page 185 "Green Chri$tma$ was probably the most controversial recording I ever made." He covers the whole story on pages 185-200. "Green Chri$tma$" is Stan's biting satire on the commercialization of the holiday. It was originally released as a comedy single, with Daws Butler performing with Stan. Capitol Records almost refused to release this record! The company eventually did but offered no publicity. It was played only on a few radio stations at the time; however it was released (Stan liked to say his records weren't released, they escaped) to a positive response. Years later, it became a hit all over again when played by Doctor Demento. Offered here is the original Stan Freberg typed script for "Green Chri$tma$." The parody had an original working title of "Chri$tmas Carol$ for Our Times", which then became "The Chri$tmas Pitch" before the final naming. This is Stan's original 17-page working typed script with his handwritten changes. Also, there are three typed onionskin pages with Stan's notes and one script marked STAN. Two have titles changed to "The Chri$tmas Pitch" while the STAN copy is hand-changed to "Green Chri$tmas." There are five pages of title ideas written by Freberg and the 10-page working sheet music for all the musical segments. All are in a Stan Freberg "Green Chri$tmas" file. Also included is a group of Christmas newspaper ads featuring tires, Scotch, electric razors, and department stores, used for research and inspiration. Rounding out this group are the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences 1958 "Best Comedy Performance" certificate of nomination (mounted on a plaque) and a sealed copy of the Capitol album Stan Freberg with the Original Cast, which features "Green Chri$tma$" as the last track on side two. Some handling and edge wear, but overall in Very Good condition.
