Description
George Pal's Winsor McCay Award (ASIFA-Hollywood, 1976). The "father" of Puppetoons, George Pal (1908 - 1980), had a long and illustrious career in motion pictures, going back to his early advertising films in Budapest and Prague, Hungary in the 1930s. Here's Mr. Pal's special Winsor McCay Award, given to him for his lifetime contribution to animation. It was presented to him at the 1976 Annie Awards ceremony hosted by Woody Allen. The Puppetoons series began after Mr. Pal relocated to the US in 1940. Of the many he made, several were nominated for Academy Awards, including the classic Tubby the Tuba (1947). The Puppetoon Movie, released in 1986, includes this short.The award is made of brass and designed to resemble a zoetrope with a revolving top, standing a little under 10", and 4.5" wide at its wooden base. A photo print of George Pal with his many awards (including this one) is included. The top does spin, but lifts off the base, so we advise care when picking it up. There is handling wear with minor discoloration. Good condition. From the George Pal Archives.
