Description

Dungeons & Dragons Original Edition "Wood Grain" Boxed Set - Third Printing (Tactical Studies Rules, 1975). Written by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. Art by Arneson, Keenan Powell, Greg Bell, C. Corey, and T. Keogh.
Contents: Three digest-sized booklets, reference sheet booklet, and corrections sheet in a 6" x 8.5" x 1.5" faux woodgrain box.
A stunning, virtually mint condition specimen, one of 2,000 copies of the third printing of the original D&D boxed set.
More commonly referred to as OD&D, derived largely from Gygax's work on the miniatures-based wargame Chainmail. This edition featured only three character classes (Fighter, Magic-User, and Cleric) and three non-human player character races (elf, dwarf, and hobbit -- the latter of which was changed to halfling due to copyright issues). An instant success, it quickly generated supplements that expanded the game with more detailed rules, character classes, magic, monsters, and miniatures.
This printing was hand-assembled by Gygax and friends, as were the previous sets, and it reportedly sold out in five months. The contents include three 36- to 40-page rule booklets -- "Men & Magic", "Monsters & Treasure", and "The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures" -- plus a 12-page booklet of reference sheets and Correction Sheet.
The box is in Very Fine condition approaching As New, with very minor wear to the extremities and some light smudging/soiling to the label; the booklets are in As New condition with white pages and shiny staples; the Correction Sheet and reference booklet are off-white to white with a little bit of mild tanning along the edges.
