Description

Dungeons & Dragons: Module #X1 The Isle of Dread (Basic) Witnessed Signatures: Dave "Zeb" Cook, David S. "Diesel" LaForce, and Jeff Dee (TSR Hobbies Inc., 1980) CBCS VG/FN 5.0 White pages. Single booklet distributed unattached to cover. Written by David Cook and Tom Moldvay. Cover by Jeff Dee. Art by Tim Truman.
A popular and influential module and one of the most widely circulated Dungeons & Dragons adventures due to its inclusion as part of the D&D Expert Set. Loosely inspired by King Kong and its Skull Island setting, writers Cook and Moldvay dug deep into their love of pulp fiction to create a "lost world" island teeming with pirates dinosaurs, exotic monsters, treasure maps, and primitive civilizations.
The Isle of Dread was also the first to focus on what is now a common element of the game -- wilderness exploration -- replacing dungeon crawling with a wide-open wilderness delineated by then-innovative hexagon map and a "sandbox"-style adventure.
Dungeon magazine ranked The Isle of Dread the 16th greatest Dungeons & Dragons adventure of all time in 2004; Jeff Dee's cover, the first full-color cover art for a D&D module, was ranked #4 in the article " Art of the Genre: The Top 10 TSR Cover Paintings of All Time" by Black Gate magazine in 2014.
As with many classic D&D adventures, The Isle of Dread continues to thrive, appearing in video game form in 2022, in updates and features in Dragon magazine, and in supplements for D&D's fourth and fifth editions. In 2018, Goodman Games published the massive 300+ page Original Adventures Reincarnated #2: The Isle of Dread, featuring the 1981 and 1983 editions of the module alongside a version converted to 5e.
This copy is signed by one of the modules authors and two of its artists, all of whom were major contributors to the early days of D&D and roleplaying games in general. CBCS notes, "Witnessed Signatures: David 'Zeb' Cook, "Diesel", and Jeff Dee on 6/6/2024."
