One of the first comprehensive sourcebooks for D&D, this hardcover volume contains 144 pages of descriptions and game statistics for various gods and legendary creatures from mythology, folklore, and popular fiction, allowing dungeon masters to incorporate them into their campaigns. It features the first appearance of such deities as Corellon Larethian, leader of the elven pantheon; chief dwarven god Moradin; the orcish god Gruumsh, and others, many of whom have become fixtures in the game. Additionally, it includes figures from Arthurian legend, the Nehwon mythos by Fritz Leiber, the Melnibonéan mythos by Michael Moorcock, and the Cthulhu Mythos by H. P. Lovecraft.
The latter two caused some consternation for TSR. Though the company had obtained permission from Moorcock and Arkham House to use their respective properties, Chaosium (publisher of the Call of Cthulhu RPG) had already licensed both. Legal action was threatened and printing was halted until the two companies reached a compromise allowing TSR to use the material provided they credited Chaosium, starting with the second printing. Ultimately, the Cthulhu and Melnibonéan sections (16 pages of content) were removed from subsequent editions, rendering the credit unnecessary. Since then, Lovecraft's creations have been mentioned only in passing, and Moorcock's not at all. In 1985, the book was revised and repackaged as Legends & Lore in an attempt to avoid the rising "Satanic panic" of the 1980s. It has since become a a "holy grail" item among collectors due to its rarity. Overall, it is in Very Good to Fine condition with some scuffing and wear to the cover hinges and extremities, and a few very faint areas of foxing on the interior.
