Gamut #1 Fanzine with Robert Crumb Story (Ken Winter and Sig Case, 1960) Condition: FN+. The history of comic fanzines is generally considered to have begun in the early 1960s, but in fact goes back to the early/mid-1950s 'zines published by EC fans like Bhob Stewart. The late '50s saw a second boom of self-publishing, with many young hopefuls attempting their own humor/satire/heroic comic stories. Robert Crumb and his brother Charles were among this second wave with their own Foo! title, and Robert contributed to a few other publisher's 'zines, like Gamut #1, published in late summer, 1960. The front cover illustrated a fanned collection of real 'zines that included Foo, EChhh, Fanfare, Tales From the Shag, Hoohah, Frantic, Concept, Image, and Insight. Crumb's best friend Marty Pahls was involved in the production of Gamut, and he wrote a five-page parody story called "Winnie the Phoo" which he gave to Robert to draw, and that story appears here -- however, we must point out that in this early days of mimeograph printing, special stencils had to be cut on waxed paper, which meant that Sig Case actually traced over Crumb's art to produce the needed stencil. Still, Crumb's magic shows through. In the introduction section, we find this listing for Crumb: "Bob Crumb and his art have been part of the fan-scene for nearly two years now... A junior in high school this Fall, Bob has not yet cracked the professional market... but we expect great things from him, eventually." Boy, they got that right!
The 'zine is in exceptionally nice condition for a 1960-vintage fanzine. With a print run of only 200 or less, it's a wonder any copies have survived, let alone one this nice. With the demand for all things Crumb-related on a steady rise, we expect a great deal of collector interest in this early example of his work.
