Todd McFarlane's "Tony Twist" Lawsuit Group with Original Sketch (1990s-2000s). It's an instant massive Todd McFarlane-related collection and then some! Over 550 items, and it's not just the inventory, which we'll detail below. This "collection" has a fascinating story to go with it.
NHL fans from the 1990s-2000s will recall the name Tony Twist (full name: Anthony Rory Twist) as the rough-and-tumble "enforcer" of the St. Louis Blues. His playing career lasted from 1989-1999. For the past several years, he has co-hosted The Smash and Twist Show on a St. Louis sports radio station.
In the late 1990s, McFarlane created a mob-enforcer character named Antonio "Tony Twist" Twistelli for his popular Spawn comic titles and animated television show. And McFarlane admitted the character was based on the real-life hockey player. Hardly flattered, the real Tony Twist explained his opposition, "I'm in pink thong underwear, smoking a cigar, ordering the kidnapping of a child while two women are naked on the couch making love to each other. I obviously didn't want any part of that... even if I was a good guy I wouldn't have participated... It's nothing I want to be affiliated with."
So, on October 31, 1997 the real Tony Twist filed a suit against Todd McFarlane Productions, HBO, and others for appropriation of his name without permission. It's quite a story, and you will want to go online for more details.
But, back to the collection we're offering. Everything in this lot was part of the trial as evidence, and it includes just about every Spawn-related comic, trade paperback, magazine, and DVD! It even includes a poster-sized sketch of the Tony Twist character that McFarlane created on the spot in the courtroom! The other posters offered here are reproductions from the comics. Nearly all the items have court evidence stickers on the covers, and some have more than one sticker.
The average grade of the books is technically VG/FN because of the stickers; otherwise, the condition would be higher. For a point of reference, the approximate Overstreet value for the books in NM-9.2 is $3,000.
For a complete list of the inventory go to Heritage's Comic homepage, where you will also see the 24" x 36" poster-size sketch McFarlane did on foam board in the courtroom, as well as three other print posters of McFarlane works that were used during court proceedings.
