Julius Schwartz - John Broome Correspondence File. This lot is an unparalleled treasure trove of DC history and intimate correspondence to Julie from one of his finest Silver Age writers, his long time friend, John Broome, and John's wife, Peggy. The letters start in the mid-1960s, and continue right on up into the 1990s. John discusses plots, yarns, and stories for the Flash, Green Lantern, Elongated Man, and the Atomic Knights. Plots discussed include an Elongated Man yarn, several Green Lantern tales such as Green Lantern #52, "Our Mastermind the Car," and even plans for the death of Iris West, the Flash's wife. John and his wife Peggy moved to France in 1961, and then John traveled extensively throughout Europe, Israel, and Japan, throughout the next three decades; his lively letters recount many of these travels. John often addresses Julie affectionately as "mein gold." The two men discuss DC office politics, comics creators, and events in their personal lives. John writes a note of condolence on the 1983 passing of Julie's wife, Jean. Julie tells John of the DC personnel sea-change in his March 22, 1968 letter, as Eddie Eisenberg, George Kashdan, Barbara Friedlander, and Arnold Drake depart, and Dick Giordano, Joe Orlando, Frank Robbins, Denny O'Neil came on board, and Julie notes, "Carmine Infantino was made art director and 'functions to some extent as editorial -- at least with the new editors.'" Finally, in a sad note, Peggy Broome writes to Julie of the details of John's passing in Thailand, in her April 20, 1999 letter. This lot must be regarded as one of the finest collections of comic book creator correspondence ever offered! From the collection of Julius Schwartz.
