    Description

John Held, Jr. Merely Margy, an Awfully Sweet Girl Daily/Sunday Comic Strip Tearsheets and Clippings Group of Approximately 45 (King Features Syndicate, 1920s-30s). Nothing says "Jazz Age" so emphatically as a cartoon by John Held, Jr. Best known for his single-image captioned illustrations, Held also dealt in narrative strips with Merely Margy and a companion feature, Joe Prep, chronicling the goofball adventures of hedonistic flappers, sheiks, and collegiate jazz-babies -- partly satirical, partly affectionate. This generous array includes six Sunday-newspaper pages and approximately 40 daily clippings. A light charge of static electricity in the plastic sleeve causes the newsprint elements to cling to one another, requiring delicate handling. Dimensions, 14" x 19" and 12" x 4". Brittle but intact, and in Good condition.
