Description
Comics Code Authority Facts about the Comics Code Booklet (Comics Magazine Association of America, Inc., c. 1955-56). This well-preserved, 24-page pamphlet is a rare example of bland, wholesome-sounding propaganda in the service of dictatorial censorship. In essence, the Comics Code made outlaws and outcasts of the publishers of the crime-and-horror funnybooks that had lent momentum to a popular and lucrative industry. The Code also wrecked many careers, often by thwarting distribution by small independent publishers - whether or not they dealt in tales of crime and/or horror. EC Comics publisher Bill Gaines had created a Frankenstein Monster by encouraging the development of a self-regulating trade group to counteract broad accusations of irresponsible storytelling and bad influences. The resulting Comics Code Authority left Gaines an outsider, with an avowed enemy, Archie Comics honcho John Goldwater, installed as president. Goldwater was still stewing over an EC-published parody of Archie, from a 1954 issue of MAD, depicting Archie Andrews and his schoolboy pals as juvenile delinquents. An antagonistic critic, Dr. Frederic Wertham, had assailed the industry in a mass-market book called Seduction of the Innocent (1954). The Comics Code played into Wertham's hands, of course, while pretending to ennoble the medium and stave off censorship. The Code's self-aggrandizing tract, here, is a horror story unto itself. The book measures 6" x 9". Very light age-toning, minimal handling wear, and faint oxidation around the binding staples. FN/VF condition.More Information: EDIT: To tweak syntax in Description.
