    Description

Coinola Player Piano (c. 1920s). From the Knott's Berry Farm coin-operated archive comes this very special player piano. This is a Coinola Model c-2 Orchestrion internal machine that has an exterior that appears to be a Style X Orchestrion. The Coinola brand was built and sold by Operators Piano Company of Chicago from 1904 until 1930. The firm was one of the most successful manufacturers of coin-operated pianos and orchestrations in America. Their instruments are considered some of the most well-made and desirable of all brand names. Internally the piano appears to be a "Style C-2" which contains piano, mandolin attachment, a rank of wooden flute pipes, bass drum, snare drum, and cymbal. This piano had a traditional keyboard and could be played by a live pianist if desired. Coinola pianos were known to utilize beautifully jeweled glass and lanterns that lit up when played. Coinola instruments are especially sought after by collectors because they use the "Style O" multi-tune music roll, a roll that specialized in utilizing beautiful solo effects and arraignments not found in most other music roll styles. This piano is made of quarter-sawn oak wood. Percussion instruments appear to have been altered from original state. Volume and speed contacts appear to be missing, meaning this machine has been modified over time. Orchestrion machines with xylophones or bells were cheaper to produce and were built in large numbers, instruments equipped with pipes however required extensive additional pressure systems which made them more expensive than other models and less made. Instruments with pipes were made in much smaller numbers and are considered very rare today. It is unknown if this style C-2 interior with the Style X exterior was a special order from the factory or was simply modified over time. Machine is sold with no implied warranty or working condition. It is sold "as is" and will require restoration. It is considered, in ANY state, a very rare machine. Fair condition.
