    Description

Carl Stalling's Personal Photo Scrapbook and Papers Collection (c. 1920-30s). Here's a lot for the true animation historian. Anyone who grew up watching early Disney and later Warner Brothers cartoons, paying attention to screen credits, knows the name "Carl Stalling." Mr. Stalling was a musical composer and orchestral conductor living in Kansas City when he met Walt Disney in the early '20s. He was hired to play musical accompaniment to Walt's silent cartoons, and when Walt moved his studio to California, the two men kept in touch. Eventually, Walt hired Carl to compose and arrange the soundtrack to several early Mickey Mouse cartoons, including Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho in 1928, which led to his hiring as the Disney Studio's first music director. The familiar song "Minnie's Yoo Hoo" (also known as "Mickey's Theme Song") was written by Carl Stalling.
This group of items includes Carl Stalling's personal photo scrapbook, filled with old photographs of Carl and his family, including lots of vacation photos, kids, babies, dogs, and everything in between. Of special interest is a small (4.25" x 2.5") picnic photo with Carl, Walt Disney, and Ub Iwerks in attendance; a vintage 10" x 8" photo of Walt and Ub together; a 1921 photo of Carl at the organ, from a Kansas City theater; printed copies of Carl's Disney-signed contracts and correspondence with Walt; several music score sheets (including "Minnie's Yoo Hoo"), a rare photo of Mrs. Wallace Reid's travel wagon promoting her 1925 film The Red Kimono; a copy of Funnyworld #18 (1978) with a Carl Stalling interview, as well as an original transcript; and plenty more for the animation historian/detective to dig through. There's also a nice original pencil sketch of Carl by Disney Studio artist Bob Givens, who worked on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This is without a doubt a one-of-a-kind collection. Conditions range from Good to Fine.
