"It's a Small World" Park Ride Penguin Prop (Walt Disney, 1964). "It's a Small World After All!" This Sherman Brothers song is one of the most publicly played songs of all time. The "Small World" attraction first opened at the New York World's Fair on April 22, 1964, sponsored by Pepsi. Tickets sold for 65¢ and 90¢, and over 10 million tickets were sold, with all proceeds going to UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund). The ride was then opened in Disneyland on 5/28/66, and is considered Mary Blair's crowning achievement. Today, this ride is seen in Disney parks in Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong, and Orlando. Here is what may be considered the "Holy Grail" of all things Mary Blair: an original "Small World" prop of the South Pole Penguin. It was refurbished by WED and given to the Blair family when the ride was briefly closed for renovation in 2008. It was then given to the Mary Blair Family Trust by Marty Sklar, and exhibited around the world. This is the South Pole Penguin that Mary Blair put a Gaucho Hat on, since it is the South Pole. In the ride you see the penguins bobbing up and down on pieces of floating ice. With this piece comes a very important, typed, two-page letter from the United States Committee for UNICEF (C. Lloyd Baily) to "Miss Mary Blair -- Walt Disney Productions" to go over a discussion that they had, about the ride, before it opened on May 28, 1964. This actual "Small World" prop measures 18.5" x 14" x 12.5". Overall condition is Very Good. From the Mary Blair Family Trust Archives.Auction Info
