Description
"Haunted Mansion" Stretching Room Disneyland Painting (Walt Disney, 1969). The Haunted Mansion opened in New Orleans Square on 8/9/69 and in 2019 is celebrating its 50th Anniversary! The Haunted Mansion boasted a population of 999 Happy Haunts. People rode in "Doom Buggies" in this ride. The "Ghost Host" of this attraction was the voice of Mr. Paul Frees. The tour of the mansion begins in the famous "Stretching Room." As the walls get larger, four portraits on the walls change right before your eyes. The four historic paintings were designed by Disney Legend Inductee and one of Disney's original "Nine Old Men," Mr. Marc Davis. The stretching room paintings were individually hand-painted from 1969-72. They would be changed over time. These Stretching Room paintings would later be prints that were hand-embellished with paint, then eventually, just prints. The original hand-painted "Stretching Room" paintings were designed to be used in the elevator/stretching rooms for a period of six months, then replaced. This lot is one of the single rarest original hand-painted stretching room paintings we have seen to come to market. Marc Davis (1913 - 2000) free-hand-painted his signature, one of only two known to have been signed by him. The two known to be signed by Marc were done at his home studio. One was of the "Quicksand" painting and the other, this one, "The Tombstone" painting. Marc used a mixture of acrylic paint with Dr. Martin watercolors to sign the art. This painting is believed to be either a WED/WDI Archived reference copy or a personal copy of Marc's. Usually actual stretching room paintings that come to market are severely trimmed, have punched registration holes at the top, and show great wear and discolor. This one has been preserved for years, and it is rare to see one this remarkably untouched and in this condition. It does have lines running through the painting, which means it may at one point actually been tested. It is very rare to find an actual Disneyland Haunted Mansion Stretching Room painting still containing so much of the original extra painted space still attached to the painting. The actual term Disneyland Operations uses for the two rooms is "Expanding Room" or as the side operators call the rooms, "E. R." The ceiling in the room is fixed and does not move, the portraits/paintings are hung at the top using specially punched registration holes into the portrait, and are rolled out from the bottom of the painting. This explains why there is very little damage seen at the top third of used portraits and why there are usually tears, wrinkles, and much discoloration toward the bottom. This painting, considered pristine for its age and history, measures 11'2" by 3'10". A wooden pole is at the top for mounting purposes. This portrait is the Elderly Widow, sitting on her husband's tombstone image. It's one of the single most identifiable pieces of Disneyland Park original artwork we have come across. Slight crease where tracks to stretching device were. Minor scuffing and edge wear. Overall condition is Very Good.Auction Info
