    Description

Playboy #1 Newsstand Edition (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC NM 9.4 White pages. Hugh Hefner's ability to obtain Marilyn Monroe for the cover and "Sweetheart of the Month" two-page poster of the first issue of Playboy, ensured the immediate success of his start-up magazine. The magazine's distribution would reach astronomical numbers within just a few years. From a printing of just over 50,000 copies for this first issue, Playboy's print run reached 5 million within 15 years.
From this copy's snow-white covers to its blinding white pages this 60+ year old magazine's condition is purely astonishing.
We think that it's safe to say that there simply aren't many copies left out there that can command a Near Mint certification. To date CGC has awarded the NM 9.4 grade to just two other copies of the Newsstand Edition, and a higher grade has yet to be certified. Oh, besides the girls, the issue contains a Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey article, "VIP on Sex" by Virgil Partch, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fiction (a Sherlock Holmes story). Not listed in Overstreet. CGC census 4/16: 3 in 9.4, none higher.

View the certification for CGC Certification ID 0501523001 and purchase grader's notes if available.
