DescriptionPlayboy #1 (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white to white pages. The Marilyn Monroe cover and "Sweetheart of the Month" two-page poster ensured interest in this premiere issue, and bought the capital-strapped publisher, Hugh Hefner, enough time to scrape together the second issue. Hef's combination of provocative photos, top-notch fiction, timely non-fiction, and outstanding cartoons soon became the standard for a "Men's Magazine" that was un-challenged for decades. Besides the allure of MM, the first issue had a Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey article, "VIP On Sex" by cartoonist Virgil Partch, and fiction by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Sherlock Holmes). This high-grade copy ranks among the handful at the top of CGC's census. Not listed in Overstreet. CGC census 5/19: 5 in 8.0, 10 higher.
