Playboy Complete Year 1954 Bound Volume (HMH Publishing, 1954). An exceptionally nice professionally bound volume of all the issues from 1954. Following Playboy's auspicious debut in December 1953 with the iconic Marilyn Monroe cover and nude poster, the fledgling publication spread its wings, establishing an identity that proved remarkably successful for decades. This volume illustrates the month-by-month growth of the men's magazine that had no peers before or since. Beautiful women, of course, but Playboy embraced a variety of themes, from fiction by the most respected of authors; sports, music, and art features; topical political and philosophical discussions; outstanding and often controversial interviews; and the finest array of cartoon artists ever assembled.This dark brown, patterned volume will complement any bookshelf! Inside are well-preserved copies of January-December 1954, still displaying bright, colorful covers and interiors of off-white to white pages. It appears that FN to Very Fine copies of the issues were selected to be bound. Note that the January issue is a rarer "Red Star" copy.
Notable Playmates of the Month in 1954 included Margaret Scott, Dolores Del Monte, Marilyn Waltz, Arline Hunter, and Terry Ryan. Pictorials included Paris Hot Spots, Yvette Dare, Lili St. Cyr, Gina Lollobrigida, and Nudity in the Foreign Film. Humor, fiction, and articles by or about Ray Bradbury, Erskine Caldwell, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Benjamin Franklin, Bob Hope, Shepherd Mead, W. Somerset Maugham, Virgil "VIP" Partch, and Ray Russell were also featured.
