    Description

Playboy #2 (HMH Publishing, 1954) Condition: VF+. Hugh Hefner's innovative venture had little margin for failure; if Playboy hadn't been well-received right away, Hef's pet project would've folded. The second issue had a lower print run than the first and no Marilyn Monroe, but there was another Sherlock Holmes story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a feature on cartoonist Milt Caniff's WWII strip Male Call, a two-page feature of holiday cartoons by Hef himself, and more "tasteful" bare-skin pictorials than in the premiere issue. The smart fiction, sports shorts, and top-notch cartoons were also in place. And the rest is... ah, you know! This is the finest copy of #2 that we've offered to date, and would've graded even higher, but there is the slightest bit of rust at the staples. A lesser-grade copy recently fetched over $2,000 in our May, 2006 auction.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
