Description
Playboy #1 Page 3 Copy (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC FN+ 6.5 Off-white to white pages. One of three variants of the initial printing of the groundbreaking first issue. These were actually the first copies printed, but were largely pulled from circulation almost immediately on Hefner's orders. For page count purposes, the front cover and the inside front cover were counted as pages 1 and 2, meaning the first inside page was considered page 3. It seems Hef did not want to confuse readers into thinking pages 1 and 2 were missing, so he decided to simply not number that page at all. An employee "corrected" what he thought was an error and inserted the "3" just before the initial print run, and Hefner was unable to retrieve all the original "Page 3" copies. Relatively few have survived since then. In nearly 24 years we've offered only a handful with higher CGC grades, and over the past three years we've only offered two copies of the variant in any grade -- both in lower grade! Marilyn Monroe cover and "Sweetheart of the Month" two-page poster. Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey article. "VIP On Sex" by Virgil Partch. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fiction (Sherlock Holmes).
