    Description

Playboy #1 Page 3 Copy (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC Conserved FN 6.0 White pages. Serious collectors of Playboy know there are two rare variations of the famous premiere issue that featured Marilyn Monroe on the cover and in a nude spread inside. Just how rare is a 'Page 3' copy (so named because unlike the most common first printing, its third page is actually numbered)? It's unclear, but the usual estimate is a mere 2,500 or so 'Page 3' copies were printed, compared to an estimated 50,000 copies of the common version. Certainly, after nearly 60 years, many of the 2,500 copies no longer exist. And the vast majority of the survivors aren't in as nice of condition as our offering. As CGC notes about this copy, the only "Conservation includes: staples replaced." And note the desirable "White pages."
The first issue of Playboy is a hot collectible, a common newsstand version in 6.0 having brought $6,795 in recent months according to the CGC-certified tracking database of GPAnalysis.com. If you haven't got your 'Page 3' copy yet, it might be the right time to nab one -- they're just not popping up every day!

    More Information:

CGC has expanded its restoration scale to help collectors understand what was done to their book. Among newly added terminology is a Conserved designation - distinct from Restored - which will apply to books for which only a limited amount of conservation has been done and only using rice paper, wheat glue, vintage staples, and/or archival tape. Specific details of the new terminology can be found at CGC's website: http://www.cgccomics.com/news/viewarticle.aspx?IDArticle=4084.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
