Playboy #1 Newsstand Edition (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages. Over the past three years we've sold just two other newsstand copies of the premiere issue that were certified with a higher grade. "The Marilyn Monroe Issue" has shown value appreciation among collectors in almost every certified grade in recent years. By publisher Hugh Hefner's own account, the first issue was produced on a shoestring, but it quickly sold out, quickly becoming the most popular men's magazine in the US. The first issue had Marilyn Monroe on the cover and on a famous poster inside, in what was then called Playboy's "Sweetheart of the Month" feature. Other highlights of the issue include an article on Big Band legends, brothers Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, a cartoon feature "VIP on Sex" by Virgil Partch, and fiction by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. And the inaugural issue was priced at just 50 cents! CGC census 2/15: 4 in 8.5, 6 higher.
