    Description

Playboy #1 Newsstand Edition (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC NM 9.4 White pages. Founding publisher Hugh Hefner was definitely on to something in 1953 when he saw his publishing dreams come to fruition with an issue that was basically put together in his apartment on a shoestring budget, borrowed mainly from family and friends. From a printing of just over 50,000 copies for this first issue, Playboy's print run reached 5 million within 15 years.
The debut issue came to be known as "the Marilyn issue" because of the inclusion of an iconic nude photo of a young Marilyn Monroe as the first centerfold. Actually, it wasn't technically a centerfold, since it took up just one page, but it was the start of the feature that more than any other became associated with the fledgling publication -- the Playmate of the Month.
This is easily the finest copy of the highly collectible debut issue of Playboy that we've ever had the opportunity to offer, far surpassing the CGC VF+ 8.5 copy we offered in 2009, which previously held the Heritage record. It's stunning, from its incredibly snow-white covers to its pristine white pages. It's a regular newsstand edition, but the overall distribution of all versions of the premiere issue was so low that copies this nice are just about unheard of. In fact, CGC hasn't awarded a higher grade to a copy yet!
At this writing, CGC hasn't published a census data report for Playboy, but have confirmed that to date only three copies of the Newsstand Edition have earned a NM 9.4 grade, and that a higher grade has yet to be certified.
