    Description

Playboy #1 (HMH Publishing, 1953) Condition: FN. This issue started a multimedia phenomenon and made Hugh Hefner a household name. It's the very first Playboy magazine, which caused a splash by featuring some 1949 nude photos of Marilyn Monroe, but also held readers' interest thanks to a canny mix of features, including jokes, cartoons, and pictorials, but also a piece by Ambrose Bierce, a Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle, a jazz article, and an article commending college football's return to the one-platoon system. The mag's introductory text says, "If we are able to give the American male a few extra laughs and a little diversion from the anxieties of the Atomic Age, we feel we've justified our existence." This is an attractive copy, with a three-inch crease on the back cover standing as the only negative. It's one of the better specimens we've seen of an issue that's not easy to find in any condition!
