    Description

Playboy #1 (HMH Publishing, 1953) Condition: FN+. This issue started a multimedia phenomenon and made Hugh Hefner a household name. It's the very first Playboy magazine, which caused a splash by featuring a 1949 nude photo of Marilyn Monroe, but also held readers' interest thanks to a canny mix of features, including jokes, cartoons, and pictorials, but also a piece by Ambrose Bierce, a Sherlock Holmes story by Arthur Conan Doyle, a jazz article, and an article commending college football's return to the one-platoon system. The mag's introductory text says, "If we are able to give the American male a few extra laughs and a little diversion from the anxieties of the Atomic Age, we feel we've justified our existence." Note that this copy, like most we've seen, has no page number printed on page 3. This issue isn't easy to find in any condition, and this is a very nice-looking copy with some very minor staining on the cover and first few pages the only negative.
