    Description

Playboy #1 (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages. We've offered just three nicer copies over the years, two in NM 9.4 and one in VF/NM 9.0, so this copy's grade puts it in rare company! Hugh Hefner launched his far-reaching empire in publishing, television, music, film, and clubs with this premiere issue, which was financed on a shoestring with largely borrowed money. The risk was great, but the reward was greater! From the Marilyn Monroe cover and center poster, to a Big Band feature on the Dorsey Brothers, to an article on college football, to a cartoon feature by Virgil Partch, to fiction by top authors of the day, the first issue foretold Hefner's grand vision of what Entertainment For Men should be. Not listed in Overstreet. CGC census 10/17: 4 in 8.5, 6 higher.
