Whiz Comics #2 (#1) (Fawcett Publications, 1940) CGC FN 6.0 Off-white to white pages. The finest copy we've ever offered of the key comic that gave us the origin and first appearance of Captain Marvel. In Ernst Gerber's influential book The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books, the first Whiz was thought to be somewhat more common than Action Comics #1, but just the opposite appears to be true. To date, CGC has certified a mere 22 "Universal" label copies of Whiz Comics #2 (#1), and 40 "Universal" copies of Action Comics #1. The main superhero of each title vied for popularity in the 1940s, and Captain Marvel held his own against Superman. In the early days of comic collecting the two key issues were considered to have approximately the same value, and as late as 1970, the first Overstreet Price Guide, listed a value of $200 for a Mint copy of Action #1 vs. a value of $150 for a Mint copy of Whiz Comics #2 (#1). It's currently ranked #13 on Overstreet's list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics, and the value of this issue is sure to be affected by the upcoming Shazam! movie scheduled for release in early 2019. C. C. Beck cover and story art. CGC notes, "small amount of dried glue on centerfold." Overstreet 2017 FN 6.0 value = $60,000. CGC census 5/18: 2 in 6.0, 5 higher.
