The Spirit #22 Mile High pedigree (Quality, 1950) CGC NM+ 9.6 White pages. It's suitably fitting that one of the very last comics from the legendary Edgar Church Mile High collection to finally hit the market is this last issue of Quality's Spirit run. For fans of Will Eisner's iconic crimefighter, this just may be the ultimate comic book version, surpassing all the Sunday newspaper sections and later series. Starting with a classic Eisner "Skinny Bones" cover, three great Eisner stories from 1946, and the added intrigue of this issue's use by the New York Legislature Committee's 1952 investigation on comics books, this book has it all. And what a book -- a sharp-cornered beauty, looking as fresh as the day Edgar brought it home!
And about that cover -- it's a real lulu, from Eisner's "Dulcet Tone" story that debuted in the 7/7/46 Sunday Spirit section. The image was so popular that it was made into a serigraph print some years ago. Like many of Eisner's femmes fatales characters, Skinny Bones was as ruthless as they come, and eventually does away with Dulcet, her partner in crime, using that dagger she conceals in her stocking. The character was loosely inspired by Lauren Bacall's performance in the movie classic, To Have and Have Not; like in that film, a Hoagy Carmichael-type piano player tells the story in song throughout, even launching into a verse from the song all Spirit fans know, "Every Little Bug". Great stuff!
    Overstreet 2011 NM- 9.2 value = $975. CGC census 9/11: 1 in 9.6, none higher.
