Description

Wonder Comics #1 (Fox, 1939) CGC Apparent NM- 9.2 Slight (P) Off-white to white pages. It only lasted two issues (before a name change to Wonderworld Comics), and it was the only appearance for the namesake Wonder Man. Furthermore, this premiere is considered "scarce" by Overstreet, "rare" by Gerber, and we've offered a copy on just one previous occasion. It's classic stuff, with a cover by Will Eisner and interior art by Bob Powell and Bob Kane.

It's a comic that caused a lawsuit, and it's ranked among the 50 most valuable Golden Age books by Overstreet. We would put it among the five scarcest books of that elite group of 50. For all its greatness, rival publisher DC didn't enjoy it -- within days they sought an injunction prohibiting further publication of a character they deemed a Superman ripoff. A judge granted the injunction, noting, "infringement has been shown both textually and pictorially." Wonder Man never appeared again. It's been noted that DC's successful copyright-infringement challenge was doubly significant as it set a precedent for the similar dispute regarding Fawcett's Captain Marvel which wasn't settled until years later.

Even without the Wonder Man angle, this would be a sought-after book, as it's the very first comic published by Fox. This one has the appearance (Apparent NM- 9.2, with slight professional restoration) as nice as the highest-graded universal (blue-label) copy that CGC has certified to date, which graded NM- 9.2. Incredibly, the next-best copy is a mere GD/VG 3.0. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: tear seal, spine split sealed, cover cleaned, reinforced." Overstreet 2008 GD 2.0 value = $1,367; VG 4.0 value = $2,734; FN 6.0 value = $4,100; VF 8.0 value = $10,300; VF/NM 9.0 value = $18,150; NM- 9.2 value = $26,000.
