Wonder Comics #1 Allentown pedigree (Fox, 1939) CGC Qualified VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages. The comic that caused a lawsuit, this is a very significant and very desirable comic book! The only appearance of Wonder Man is ranked among the 50 most valuable Golden Age books by Overstreet, and we would put it among the five scarcest books of that elite group of 50. The spectacular cover image is the work of none other than Will Eisner! The folks at DC didn't enjoy it -- within days they sought an injunction prohibiting further publication of a character they deemed a Superman ripoff. A judge granted the injunction, noting, "infringement has been shown both textually and pictorially." Wonder Man never appeared again. It's been noted that DC's successful copyright-infringement challenge was doubly significant as it set a precedent for the similar dispute regarding Fawcett's Captain Marvel which wasn't settled until years later. Even without the Wonder Man angle, this would be a sought-after book, as it's the very first comic published by Fox. The Eisner cover is pure Golden Age greatness, and this pedigree specimen absolutely beams at you. And as for other high-grade copies... the universal (blue-label) category of CGC's census shows just one 9.2, and the next-best copy is a mere GD/VG 3.0. CGC notes, "4-inch spine split on bottom spine." Overstreet 2006 VF/NM 9.0 value = $17,000; NM- 9.2 value = $24,000.
