USA Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages. One of Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics, this is one of the prettiest copies that we have ever seen of the World War II classic! The colors on this lovely, flat Joe Simon and Jack Kirby cover truly have to be seen in person to be believed -- just check out our high resolution scans of the book at
Timely publisher Martin Goodman had some misgivings about the title of this series, fearing objection on the part of the government, and his lawyer convinced him that Timely would be in the clear if they simply took out the periods in U.S.A., thus, this is the only cover on which the periods appear, with stars used thereafter.
The book contains the origin and first appearance of the Whizzer, and the origin of Major Liberty (called Mister Liberty in this first issue). The Defender (who gets a Simon & Kirby splash page inside) begins a run, with his sidekick Rusty, and Jack Frost stories begin as well. Basil Wolverton even contributed art on the Rockman story. Overstreet 2017 VF 8.0 value = $7,000; VF/NM 9.0 value = $12,500. CGC census 11/17: 2 in 8.5, 6 higher.
