Description
Superman Early Issues Bound Volumes (DC, 1938-43). A unique collection of the first few years worth of Superman stories, bound into a set of four hardcover volumes. Note that these are solely the Superman-related stories from copies of Action Comics #7-58, Superman #1-20, World's Best Comics #1, World's Finest #2-8, and New York World's Fair 1939 and 1940 -- with no gaps in these runs -- that were separated from their respective issues and bound circa 1942-43; the covers, backup features, ad pages, et cetera, are not included in the contents, having been removed prior to the binding process. Unlike the Batman volumes in this same auction, some pages here have had panels clipped from them.Though it may not be the ideal presentation of these key early issues, the volumes are nevertheless a fantastic collection of rare and important Superman stories in raw form, with superb color quality that is often poorly reproduced in modern reprints. Highlights include the first appearances of Lex Luthor, the Prankster, Perry White, and the Daily Planet.
The volumes themselves are in overall nice condition, with some mild shelf wear to the binding; the pages are supple and primarily cream-colored, with a little bit of chipping along the edges in a few instances. Each volume has the original owner's name handwritten on the frontpapers. This is a great way to obtain these scarce early issues, and Golden Age collectors may also want to consider the similar Batman volumes also offered in this auction. The state of these issues makes it difficult to affix a firm value; however, it should be noted the approximate Overstreet VG 4.0 value for the group (if the comics were complete) would be $150,000.
