    Description

Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC VG+ 4.5 Cream to off-white pages. Unrestored copies of this major key are very difficult to come by. We have never offered an unrestored copy graded better than 5.0 in 20 years of auctions! Superman #1 was the first time an entire comic was devoted to a single superhero. It arrived on newsstands barely a year after the Man of Steel's first appearance in Action Comics #1, to support his meteoric rise in popularity. Superman #1 is currently ranked #3 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list.
Why are unrestored copies so hard to find? Part of the answer is surely the back cover pinup image of Superman, including a helpful dotted line for kids who wanted to cut that back cover off. The same paper drives that claimed most of the other comics from that era are another answer, and a third is that these stories were read and re-read, simply wearing the comics out.
It's also worth noting that the cover, by Superman's co-creator Joe Shuster, is one of the most recognizable covers in the history of the medium.
    Overstreet 2020 VG 4.0 value = $226,000. CGC census 9/20: 3 in 4.5, 11 higher.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
