Description

Pocket Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (Harvey, 1941) Condition: VF/NM. This is the very first Harvey Comic, an extremely difficult book to find, in fact we can't remember the last time one has changed hands in any venue (CGC has only certified one as of this writing, a copy in FN 6.0 condition). And by golly, this Mile High looks so super-fresh, we feel like the kids who plucked it off the stands way back when. The story behind this book: Alfred Harvey, who had once worked at Fox, had the idea for a small-format comic that would be attractive to kids because it offered 100 pages (including covers) for a dime rather than the standard 68. He found a backer and made his plan a reality, getting his former Fox colleague Joe Simon to do the cover art for this first issue. Alas, the small format (5 1/8" by 7 1/4") proved to have one disadvantage: it was too easily shoplifted, and thus unpopular with newsdealers. Still, Harvey was on the map, and decades of success would follow. The issue has the first appearance of the Black Cat and also introduces the Spirit of '76 and a host of other characters. The lead feature is Satan, who, the story reveals, is friends with Hitler! Otto Binder and Al Avison were among the creators contributing to this very first Harvey. Overstreet 2006 VF/NM 9.0 value = $950; NM- 9.2 value = $1,300.From the John McLaughlin Collection.
