Phantom Lady #17 The Promise Collection Pedigree (Fox Features Syndicate, 1948) CGC NM+ 9.6 Pink pages. Perhaps the single most desirable book in the "Promise Collection" selection we're offering in this sale. This classic bondage cover (courtesy of Matt Baker, and possibly his most famous cover) earned it a mention in Seduction of the Innocent, in which Dr. Fredric Wertham dubbed it "a sadist's dream". In a 2016 Heritage/CGC poll collectors named this one of the top five covers of the Golden Age. Baker also provided the book's story art. CGC's "pink pages" notation refers to the fact that, in an effort to save a few bucks, Fox printed several of their comics on pink paper (which they apparently got quite a deal on) back in 1948. It's no surprise this one is currently ranked at #89 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list. Overstreet 2020 NM- 9.2 value = $40,000. CGC census 6/21: 1 in 9.6, none higher.
