Marvel Comics #1 (Timely, 1939) CGC Apparent VF 8.0 Extensive (P) White pages. The first Marvel (known as Timely Comics in 1939) ranks among the elite few of the most important comic books ever issued. Collectors have held it in such high regard that as recently as 1987, it was considered the most valuable comic book of all. The first appearances of the Human Torch, Ka-Zar, and the Angel are here, as is the origin of Sub-Mariner, the latter having first appeared only a few months earlier in the giveaway Motion Picture Funnies Weekly #1. High-grade copies are very tough to find; CGC's census counts only four Universal copies of VF 8.0 or better, and just four other restored copies have earned Apparent VF 8.0 or better. Our offering presents even better from the front, rivaling in appearance the finest copies we've seen. The classic Golden Age lineup of Carl Burgos on the Human Torch, Bill Everett on Sub-Mariner, and Paul Gustavson on the Angel provided the interior art, with renowned pulp artist Frank R. Paul providing the cover. Of the professional restoration CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, interior lightened, reinforced." Overstreet 2012 GD 2.0 value = $21,000; VG 4.0 value = $42,000; FN 6.0 value = $63,000; VF 8.0 value = $135,000.
