    Description

Detective Comics #40 (DC, 1940) CGC Apparent FN/VF 7.0 Moderate (P) Cream to off-white pages. A seminal issue, #40 contains not only the origin and first appearance of Clayface, but also presents the first Joker cover appearance (sans white face and purple suit). The Joker story that was intended for this issue was instead used in Batman #1. The cover of this ish is very similar to a splash page in the second Joker story in Batman #1. Artists include Bob Kane, Jerry Robinson, and Fred Guardineer. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced." Overstreet 2011 GD 2.0 value = $838; VG 4.0 value = $1,676; FN 6.0 value = $2,514. From the Ben Novack, Jr. Estate Collection.
