Detective Comics #32 (DC, 1939) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages. The pre-1939 issues of DC's namesake title present a daunting challenge to the collector, especially if the goal is to assemble high-grade copies. For five of the earliest issues, the highest-graded known examples are less than VF 8.0. Just 10 issues between #1 and 32 have earned NM- 9.2 grades or better from CGC to date, with a mere five books awarded as high as NM 9.4. Our brilliant offering is one of only two comics in the #1-32 run to achieve NM+ 9.6. The next highest-graded CGC copy for #32 checks in at VF- 7.5! Batman uses a gun for the first time in this issue, and Overstreet notes that "This was the first time a costumed hero used a gun in comic books." Fred Guardineer did the cover, one of the last non-Batman covers of the title, and he and other notable Golden Age greats Sheldon Moldoff, Joe Shuster, and Bob Kane contributed interior art. Overstreet 2016 NM- 9.2 value = $26,000. CGC census 2/17: 1 in 9.6, none higher.
