Detective Comics #31 (DC, 1939) CGC Apparent FN+ 6.5 Moderate (P) Cream to off-white pages. One of the most famous comic book covers of all, this one's a classic by any measure. It's a cover which has been paid homage to by many subsequent Bat-artists over the years, but none have matched the ominous mood set here by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. The intense interest in this cover is also the primary reason that this book is listed in the Top 20 of Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics. But don't discount the story, which has a few major firsts, namely the debuts of the Batplane (called Batgyro here) and the Batarang (spelled "Baterang" in this early appearance). It also features the first appearance of Bruce Wayne's fiancee, Julie Madison. As this was a very early Batman appearance, the Bat-story is backed up by a plethora of other detective stories, the most notable of which is Slam Bradley, by Superman's creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, spine splits sealed, reinforced." Overstreet 2013 GD 2.0 value = $8,333; VG 4.0 value = $16,667; FN 6.0 value = $25,000. From the Dino Mauricio Golden Age Classic Cover Collection.
