Description
Detective Comics #27 (DC, 1939) Condition: Coverless and Missing Centerfold. Depending on your orientation, it's the most or second most desirable Golden Age comic book of all, and there will be no lack of serious bidders to own a coverless copy of the issue that introduced Batman some 78 years ago. The copy is also missing the centerfold, but the interior is otherwise complete. It comes up rarely in any condition, as evidenced by our auction archives. In most years since 2001, we've offered just one copy, and this is the first we've offered in over 18 months. Other than the centerfold, all the interior pages are present, but each wrap has been separated, so the pages are loose. The outer edges have been trimmed tight to less than seven inches (which on many pages is right to the panel) in order to fit in a spiral volume. The inner edges display multiple holes that were created to accommodate the binding. The outer, exposed edges show more aging than the inner edge, with some of the pages being slightly brittle. The first page has some paper flaked off at the top left, and a half-inch tear along the top left border. Appearance-wise, the pages average cream to off-white, except along the edges, which average tan to cream. And while the front cover is missing, included is most of the iconic issue's back cover, which is missing a large chunk from the middle (approximately one-third of the cover), as well as some smaller chips, and has some water damage. The interior art is by Kane, Fred Guardineer, Joe Shuster, and Leo O'Mealia. Commissioner Gordon also made his first appearance in this classic book. Overstreet 2017 GD 2.0 value = $150,000.More information about Detective Comics, and Detective Comics #27 Comic Title.
