    Description

Detective Comics #27 (DC, 1939) CGC Apparent FN+ 6.5 Extensive (B-5) Off-white to white pages. In the world of comic collecting, two publishers stand out -- DC and Marvel (formerly Timely, then Atlas). In the world of DC collectors, two superheroes stand above all others -- Superman and Batman. In recent decades Batman has narrowed the gap between the two iconic first-appearance issues to the point that many observers view the two as virtually equal in popularity, if not historical importance. Unrestored copies of Detective Comics #27 have fetched our four highest prices-realized to date -- the highest a VF 8.0 copy that went for over $1,000,000 in 2010. The cover's by co-creator Bob Kane, and he provided interior art, as did fellow Golden Age legends Joe Shuster and Fred Guardineer. Besides Batman, this issue also featured the first appearance of Commissioner Gordon. Just a handful of copies of the issue have earned higher unrestored grades from CGC, who notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cover cleaned, interior lightened, reinforced." Overstreet 2013 GD 2.0 value = $84,000; VG 4.0 value = $168,000; FN 6.0 value = $252,000.

    More Information:

CGC has expanded its restoration scale to help collectors understand what was done to their book. Among newly added terminology, a letter grade of 'A', 'B', or 'C' is assigned to indicate the quality of the materials used in restoration coupled with the visual quality of the work done. 'A' denotes Excellent, 'B' is Fine, and 'C' is Poor. A quantitative numerical scale of 1-5 is assigned to indicate the extent of the restoration: Slight (1), Slight/Moderate, Moderate, Moderate/Extensive, and Extensive (5), respectively. Specific details of the new terminology can be found at CGC's website:
