    Description

Captain America Comics #3 (Timely, 1941) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Cream to off-white pages. Overstreet calls this book's bondage cover "classic", and when you've got Alex Schomburg depicting the wicked machinations of the Red Skull it's impossible to disagree. The vast array of talent present in this issue also includes seven stories written by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, most of them drawn by S&K as well, with an assist by Mac Raboy on the Tuk tale and art by Reed Crandall on the Hurricane backup. Text features are usually of little interest, but this issue's "Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge" is of great significance: It's the very first published work of a young Stan Lee. This stunning copy is one of a mere handful that grade higher than VF 8.0. The cover is in ridiculously good condition, with vibrant, unbroken color throughout. Overstreet 2012 VF/NM 9.0 value = $22,300; NM- 9.2 value = $33,000. CGC census 7/12: 1 in 9.0, 3 higher. From the Empire Comics Collection.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
