Description
Batman Early Issues Bound Volumes (DC, 1939-43). An unorthodox yet intriguing collection of the first four-and-a-half years worth of Batman stories, bound into a set of three hardcover volumes. Note that these are solely the Batman-related stories from copies of Detective Comics #27-73 (each issue, including key issues #27, 31, 33, 35, and 38), Batman #1-14 (inclusive), World's Best Comics #1, World's Finest #2-8 (inclusive), and New York World's Fair 1940 that were separated from their respective issues and bound circa 1942-43; the covers, backup features, ad pages, et cetera, are not included in the contents, having been removed prior to the binding process.Though it may not be the ideal presentation of these key early issues, it does represent a fantastic collection of rare and important Batman stories in raw form, with superb color quality that is often poorly reproduced in modern reprints. Among the tales found here are Batman's iconic first appearance; his two-part battle with his first "name" villain, Dr. Death; and his two-part battle with the Monk -- a story which featured a rare instance of Batman using a gun to subdue the bad guys, making him the first costumed hero to do so.
Other highlights include the first appearances of Robin and Commissioner Gordon, as well as the first appearances of many of Batman's long-standing archenemies: the Joker, Hugo Strange, Clayface, the Penguin, the Scarecrow, Two-Face, and Catwoman; the debut of the Batmobile and the batarangs; Robin's first solo adventure; and the Joker's date with the electric chair.
The volumes themselves are in overall nice condition, with some mild shelf wear to the binding; the pages are supple and primarily cream-colored, with a little bit of chipping along the edges in a few instances. This is a great way to obtain these scarce early issues, and Golden Age collectors may also want to consider the similar Superman volumes also offered in this auction. The state of these issues makes it difficult to affix a firm value; however, it should be noted the approximate Overstreet VG 4.0 value for the group (if the comics were complete) would be $245,000.
