All Star Comics #3 Billy Wright Pedigree (DC, 1940) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white to white pages. An unrestored high-grade copy of All Star #3 is very seldom offered for sale. A key comic in anyone's book, this ranks #26 on Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Comics list. In some quarters this issue is held in even higher esteem, as the Justice Society of America, which made its first appearance here, enjoyed a fanatical following in its heyday and thereafter. This isn't just the first appearance of this superhero group, it's the first appearance of any superhero group! "A breakthrough concept, second in importance only to the creation of the super hero" is how Overstreet once summarized the significance of this issue. Some have even advanced the theory that the concept was unprecedented in all of fiction, as even the Knights of the Round Table didn't hold meetings before joining to vanquish a common opponent!
The cover image is one of the most famous in the history of comics, and it's been imitated and paid homage to on many occasions (E. E. Hibbard is generally credited as the artist). Shown here are the Atom (that character's first appearance on any comic cover), the Sandman, the Spectre, the Flash, Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Green Lantern, and the Hour-Man. Paul Levitz's recent book noted that some point to the end of the All Star series in 1951 as the end of the Golden Age, a strong testament to the influence of this title.
The last time we saw a copy with a grade this high was when we auctioned this same copy for $49,293 in 2012. GPAnalysis notes the 2017 sale of a 7.0 copy (not by Heritage) for $40,000, and we auctioned the 9.6 Mile High copy for $126,500 in 2002, or years before six-figure prices for major key books became relatively commonplace. Overstreet 2019 VF 8.0 value = $49,200; VF/NM 9.0 value = $94,600. CGC census 8/19: 2 in 8.5, 2 higher. Auctioned on Behalf of Tadano America Corporation.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.View More Testimonials
